Sludge dewatering is a key stage in sludge treatment. Rather than removing all moisture, its primary purpose is to reduce the water content of sludge, making it easier and more economical to transport, store, and dispose of.

Raw sludge generated from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment typically contains 95-99% water. Without dewatering, the large volume of water significantly increases transportation costs, storage requirements, and downstream treatment expenses. For this reason, mechanical dewatering has become a standard step in most sludge treatment processes.

 

Why Can’t Raw Sludge Be Transported Directly?

Consider one tonne of sludge with a moisture content of 98%. It contains only around 20 kg of dry solids, while the remaining 980 kg is water.

Transporting untreated sludge means most of the cost is spent moving water rather than solids.

Mechanical dewatering can typically reduce the moisture content to around 75-85%, depending on sludge characteristics and the dewatering technology used. This significantly reduces sludge volume and weight, helping lower transportation and disposal costs.

 

What Processes Take Place Before Sludge Dewatering?

Although treatment processes vary between facilities, a typical sludge handling system includes the following steps:

  1. Sludge Collection – Primary sludge, waste activated sludge, or industrial sludge is collected for treatment.
  2. Sludge Thickening – The solids concentration is increased before mechanical dewatering to reduce the hydraulic load on downstream equipment.
  3. Sludge Conditioning – Flocculants are added to improve particle aggregation and enhance water release.
  4. Mechanical Dewatering – Pressure, centrifugal force, or mechanical compression separates water from solids.

For low-solids sludge, a thickening stage is often included to improve the efficiency of the subsequent dewatering process.

Different technologies are designed for different sludge characteristics and operational requirements.

  • Land application (where regulations permit)
  • Sanitary landfill
  • Incineration
  • Building material production
  • Co-processing in cement kilns
  • Anaerobic digestion followed by resource recovery

The most suitable disposal route depends on local environmental policies and project requirements.

Equipment performance is important, but several other factors have an equally significant impact on dewatering efficiency.

These include:

  • Sludge source and composition
  • Solids concentration
  • Organic content
  • Flocculant type and dosage
  • Conditioning time
  • Sludge temperature
  • Operating parameters

Even when using the same dewatering equipment, performance can vary considerably between projects because sludge characteristics differ. Optimising operating conditions is therefore essential for achieving stable and efficient dewatering.

 

The primary objective of sludge dewatering is to reduce water content, minimise transportation and disposal costs, and prepare sludge for subsequent treatment or resource recovery.

In practice, effective sludge treatment depends not only on the dewatering equipment itself, but also on appropriate sludge conditioning, process design, and operational control. Selecting the right dewatering technology should always be based on the characteristics of the sludge and the overall treatment requirements.
